A Psycho-Spiritual History of Panjab - ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਮਨੋ-ਆਤਮਿਕ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ)
Panjab, much like its people, is a unique land. Its history is as little understood, or even misunderstood, as its people. Its extraordinarily violent history is enshrouded in an incomparably loving and welcoming culture. Today, Panjab is embroiled in a struggle for its very survival. Understanding this crisis and finding a way out are dependent on our grasp on its history and its collective psyche. This course is a step in that direction.
ਪੰਜਾਬ: ਇਹ ਨਾਂ ਬੋਲਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਇਲਾਹੀ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤਲਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਹੁਸੀਨ, ਸੁਰਾਂਗਲਾ, ਤੇ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈ, ਇਸਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਓਨਾ ਹੀ ਖੂਨੀ ਜੰਗਾਂ ਤੇ ਲਹੂ-ਵੀਟਵੇਂ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ। ਅੱਜ ਇਹ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਦੇਸ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਨਿਰਣਾਇਕ ਮੋੜ ਉੱਤੇ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਇਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮੋੜ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਖਾਤਮੇ ਦਾ ਅਗੇਤਾ ਰੁਦਨ ਤੇ ਇਸਦੀ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਜਿੱਤ ਦੇ ਜਸ਼ਨ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਸੁਣੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਸਦੇ ਭੂਤ ਨਾਲ ਅਟੁੱਟ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮੁਲਕ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਅਮੀਰ ਹੈ ਇਸਦੀ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰੀ ਓਨੀ ਹੀ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਹੈ। ਪਿਛਲੀ ਡੇਢ ਸਦੀ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਦਰਬਾਰੀ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੰਧਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਕਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡੀ। ਇਹ ਕੋਰਸ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੇ ਮਨੋ-ਆਤਮਿਕ ਪਰਿਪੇਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਜਤਨ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਕੋਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਅਮੀਰ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਰਹਿਤਲ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਜੂਦ ਵਿਚ ਆਈਆਂ ਮਨੋ-ਆਤਮਿਕ ਤਬਦੀਲੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਪੇਖ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਇਸ ਕੋਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਪੰਜ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਇਹ ਕੋਰਸ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚਲੀ ਹੜੱਪਾ ਸੱਭਿਅਤਾ ਦੇ ਆਰੰਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਰੀਆਂ ਹਮਲਿਆਂ, ਇੰਡੋ-ਯੌਰਪੀਅਨ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਨੀਆਤੀ ਬਣਤਰ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ, ਪੱਛਮ ਦੀ ਸੱਭਿਅਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਟਕਰਾਅ (ਮੈਸੇਦੋਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਿਕੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਹਮਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪੋਰਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਬੀਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੰਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ), ਮਸੀਹੀ ਯੁੱਗ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਦਹਿਸਦੀ, ਅਤੇ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਏ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨੀ ਹਮਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰੇਗਾ।
ਪਿਛਲੀ ਦਹਿਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਅੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਵਰੋਸਾਈ ਗਈ। ਇਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਵਜੂਦ ਦਾ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਾਇਆ-ਕਲਪ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ-ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਠ੍ਹਾਰਵੀਂ ਮਸੀਹੀ ਸਦੀ ਦਾ ਖੂਨੀ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ, ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਵਿਲੱਖਣ ਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਵਰਣਨ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਬਸਤੀਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਗਾਥਾ, ਬਸਤੀਵਾਦੀ ਦੌਰ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਰੂਹ ਤੱਕ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਉਤਰੀ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਥਿਆ, ’੪੭ ਦੇ ਉਜਾੜੇ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਅਗਲੇ ਹਾਲਾਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੜਚੋਲ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ੧੯੮੪ ਦੇ ਘੱਲੂਘਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਗਾਥਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਕੋਰਸ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕੋਰਸ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਤਰਾਸਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਰਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਖਤਮ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
ਇਸ ਕੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਵਿਲੱਖਣਤਾ ਇਹ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ ਕਿ ਉਪਰ ਦੱਸੇ ਗਏ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੌਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੋ-ਆਤਮਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਸੂਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰੋ ਕੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

Lecturer: Prabhsharanbir Singh
Prabhsharanbir Singh did his PhD at the Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program at the University of British Columbia. His teaching and research interests include philosophy, psychoanalysis, cultural politics of identity, globalization, decolonial studies, and Sikh Studies. In his dissertation, he examined the role of colonial technologies of control in shaping postcolonial subjectivity in South Asia. He has published several scholarly articles in research journals like Sikh Formations and The Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology. His most recent publication is ‘Deep Sidhu, Kisan Morcha and the erasure of Sikh suffering in the liberal imagination.’ He holds an MA in Philosophy from Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. He loves hiking, birding, and photography in his spare time.
